Parents as Teachers
|"Whatever we teach, whether it is spelling or geography, history, or chemistry, we have to do it in a way that enables our humanity to grow through remembering (being), thinking (truth), and communicating (love)."
— The Purpose of Education: A Catholic Primer by Stratford Caldecott
The goal of education is the formation of the child and not merely having them get the work done. Children are not "buckets" to drop information into their heads. God gave them the desire to know, and we are doing well when we foster that desire. This is what I help you do for your child at Home School Wisdom through one-on-one phone consultations and on-line resources.
Duty of Parents is to Tach their Children
|"Since they have conferred life on their children, parents have the original, primary, and inalienable right to edcuate them; hence they must be acknowledged as the first and foremeost educators of their children." St. Pope John Paul II
||"Parents have a most grave duty and enjoy the primary right of educating to the very best of their ability, their children physically, socially, culturally, morally, and religiously as well."
— Code of Canon Law, Paragraph1136
What are the Requirements?
The requirements for parents to homeschool vary from state to state, some needing little more than you telling the school district that you are homeschooling, some needing a full academic plan. Home School Legal Defense Association [HSLDA] can explain the full legal ramifitions of homeschooling for every state, as well as supporting and providing families with legal advice and representation all the way to the Supreme Court should that be necessary. HSLDA is known for its enthusiastic support of parental rights. Membership costs about $100 per year.
I am Marcia Neill, a very experienced home educator and administrator. In 1992, I opened St. Michael the Archangel Academy in Orange County, California. For 23 years, I administrated the kindergarten through 12th- grade academy for families who wanted a Christ-centered independent study program. I have been truly blessed to share in the many lives of those families who were part of St. Michael the Archangel Academy. Nearly all those who graduated from high school went on to the college/universities of their choice. There were National Merit Scholars and Scholarship Awards, and the average SAT score was well above the national average.
In 2016, I closed St. Michael the Archangel Academy because my family relocated to Washington State. Today, I am actively involved in teaching my grandchildren and in a local homeschooling co-op. It would be an honor to advise and help families determine which curriculum program might be the best for their family and how to plan your week.
